My dilemma(s) about blogging my good deals…

Hi everyone. Remember me? I used to post good deals.

I still get good deals. I just have a hard time finding the time to post about them. Plus, I’ve found out that the deals I get at the grocery stores in Hagerstown, MD are really different than those elsewhere because the Maryland coupon policies are different (read: often much more friendly) than the stores in PA. I drive 20 minutes to get groceries now…almost all the time.

Here’s an example of today’s grocery trip and how “personalized” it is…or, how me posting it doesn’t help the average Josephine Shmoe.

Today’s trip to Martin’s

  • 1 YoBaby Stonyfield Farms Yogurt – $2.39 shelf price
  • 2 Giant Shredded Cheeses, on sale $2 each
  • Turkey Hill Light Ice Cream, on sale $2.50 each
  • 5 jars of Smuckers grape jelly, on sale for $1.99 each, buy 5 and get $5 off instantly
  • 1 lb. bag of Giant brand baby carrots
  • 2 Chobani Yogurt
  • 5 boxes of Smucker’s Snack ‘n Waffles, on sale for $2.50 each, buy 5 and get $5 off instantly
  • 1 half gallon of skim milk, $1.70 shelf price
  • 1 Better ‘n Eggs egg substitute, on sale for $3.99
  • 1 Pompeian Extra Light Olive Oil, on sale for $3.49
  • 3 Beech Nut 100% juices, on sale for $2.19 each
  • 1 KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce, on sale for $2.50

I paid $16.14 for this trip and got 200 gas points. And now I have some jelly to donate, because holy cow, that’s a lot of jelly.

So now you ask…why don’t I bother posting? I’ve been wondering the same thing. On my trip home from the store, I came up with some of the reasons (other than finding the time) that I hesitate to post deals like this:

  • DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATES: The Giant/Martin’s stores in MD double four like coupons. The stores in PA only double the first coupon and only take up to 4 like coupons in one transaction. So, I used four $.75/1 Smuckers coupons from coupons.com (zip 90210), which all doubled. So the jelly (after the $5 instant savings) cost me $4.95 and I had $6 off in coupons. So I made $1.05 buying the jelly. If I did this in the PA store 5 minutes from my house, the jelly would have cost me $1.20. In this instance, driving to MD saved me $2.25 just on this item, I could purchase all my items in one transaction, and the store is larger and has better stock for sales.
  • STORE-ISSUED COUPONS ARE NOT CONSISTENT ACROSS GEOGRAPHIC REGIONS. My mom lives in a town that just built a new Giant and she is getting great coupons in the mail. The most recent coupon book came with 3 coupons for each of the next four weeks. This week’s coupons were: 1 Free Turkey Hill Ice Cream wyb $15 worth of product, 1 Free bag of carrots wyb $15 worth of product, and a $5 off $30 coupon. We did not get these coupons, but since my mom doesn’t shop at Giant she gives me those coupons. Win!
  • STORE ISSUED COUPONS ARE NOT CONSISTENT PERIOD. I take advantage of the Giant/Martin’s eCoupons that you can “get” on their website. You create an account and enter your Bonuscard #, and then you can “add” eCoupons to your card. Right now there is a $.75/2 chobani yogurt coupon in my account…but not in everyone’s account. I paired that $.75/2 store coupon with the Chobani $10/10 sale and used two $.30/1 coupons from the Chobani website (which doubled). So I paid $.05 for two Greek yogurts. If you didn’t get that coupon in your account, the deal isn’t nearly as good.
  • DID YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DEALS I DID? I happened to have picked up 5 of the Giant Summer Savings coupon books at the store in early June (I think), which is where I was able to get 5 of the $1/1 coupons for the Snack ‘n Waffles. So the 5 boxes of waffles after instant savings and coupons cost me $2.50. However, I doubt you happened to also pick up 5 of these, so your deal without the coupons would have been $7.50…not great. And, for what it’s worth, I had one of these waffles for breakfast and they are not that good tasting or good for you. Deal fail.

So…that’s life here. Spending about $20 a week on groceries unless it’s a stock-up week on fruits, veggies, or meat…in which case it’s usually more like $40. Although the garden sure has kept our veggie purchases to a minimum this year. We made stuffed peppers, lettuce wraps, bread, and kielbasa for 8 people on Friday night and it cost us less than $10. Go me.

My Crazy Cereal Deal

Ok, so coupons.com just released a $5/5 Kellogg’s Cereal coupon. Use zip code 84711 and find the coupon on page 2 or 3. Print it fast if you’re interested – the coupons have been going very quickly.

Anyway, I plan to go to Giant today and use these coupons with their Kellogg’s Promotion.

Here’s the plan:

Buy 20 boxes of Kellogg’s cereal that are specially marked for the Cars2 Promotion at $3.49 or less each = about $70
Use (4) $5/5 coupons = -$20
Get (5) $6 instant savings = -$30
Turn in codes for Cars for Cash gas cards (4 boxes with codes = $5) = $25 in gas cards
Get (5) catalinas for free milk.

So, when this deal is all over I make $5 buying 20 boxes of cereal and get 4 gallons of free milk. Don’t worry – I’m donating the cereal. 🙂

Cheap Ice Cream at Giant

This week Breyers ice cream is on sale 2/$5 at Giant. You can print a $.75/1 Breyer’s Blasts coupon twice per computer from their facebook page. The ice cream is also part of the gas promotion (buy 6 get 20 cents off per gallon), so you could combine this deal with a few other products to earn cheap(er) gas.

If you don’t want or need the other products (like me), print two coupons, pay in separate transactions (so both coupons double), and you will get each tub of ice cream for $1.

Giant Food Cereal Promo

This week the General Mills cereal promo returned to Giant. Buy any 4 General Mills cereals, get $6 off instantly and a catalina coupon for free milk (up to $4.50) on your next order.

Although it says the promo is not good on discontinued cereals, the deal is working with discontinued cereals.

Today I bought 4 boxes of Wheaties Fuel that were marked discontinued and priced at $2.67 each. I then used (4) $1/1 coupons from the Wheaties website (you will need 2 computers to print 4 coupons) which brought each box to $1.67 and my total to $6.68. Then, $6 instant savings and the milk catalina meant I paid $.68 for a gallon of milk and 4 boxes of cereal. Try this deal out for cheap cereal.

Cheap Coffee and Card Moneymaker at Martin’s/Giant

The Eight O’Clock Coffee is priced $5.99 and is BOGO this week. Use the $2/2 coupon available here or in the inserts from last Sunday (6/5) to get two bags of coffee for $3.99!

There is also a promotion on Hallmark Cards – buy 3 and get $5 off instantly. I bought three sets of 3 cards that were $1.49 each (so my total was $4.47 for the cards) and got $5 off instantly, making each set of cards a $.53 money maker. I separated the sets of cards into separate transactions so I’m not sure if it will work in one or not. If you try it, leave a comment.

EDIT: I just checked my receipt and forgot that Giant bonuscard saves me an additional 10% on all cards. So, each card cost me $1.34, making each set of 3 cards a $.98 moneymaker.

Free Oscar Meyer Subs at Giant (& cheap lunchables)

If you can find multiple coupons from this past Sunday’s insert (5/15), then you’ll have a good deal at Giant.

Oscar Meyer products are Buy 3, Get $3 off instantly (the items can be mixed and matched).  There are several coupons in this week past week’s insert to pair with the deal, but here are the best two:

FREE SUBS!
Buy 3 sub sandwiches at $2.00 ea = $6
Use (3) $1 coupons
Get $3 instantly

CHEAP LUNCHABLES!
Buy 3 @ 2.69 each = 8.07
Use (3) $1 coupons
Get $3 instantly
Total for 3 = 2.07
These aren’t something I would normally buy, but they will make great picnic foods!

Plus, our store in Mount Joy is having grand opening specials, so I had to “spend” $15 to get free pasta, spaghetti sauce & Oreos… I walked out with 3 said free items, 6 lunchables, and 6 subs for $2.63 because somehow the catalina also spit out some random $1.50 off coupon that the cashier scanned!  SCORE!  I’m running out of room in the fridge.

Deals at Martin’s/Giant this week

We have been waiting for a good sale on gum here at our house. Patience pays off, apparently.

This week at Martin’s/Giant Orbitz gum is 3 for $2 or $.67 each. Use the $1/2 coupon from the 4/17 SS to get 2 packs for about $.17 each.

My local store has a clearance rack in one of the freezer aisles. Today I found Dunkin’ Donuts Hazlenut Coffee marked down to $4.39. I bought all four using my $1.50/1 coupons from the 4/17 SS, which brought each bag down to $2.89. Happy husband.
